While its symptoms are similar to those of a common cold, making them easy to confuse, a cold is caused by a virus, whereas rhinitis is characterized by an overreaction of the nasal mucous membrane to specific substances. Rhinitis can be broadly divided into infectious rhinitis and non-infectious rhinitis.
Infectious Rhinitis
This type of rhinitis results from infection by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms. It primarily includes acute rhinitis and chronic rhinitis; what we commonly refer to as a common cold also falls under acute infectious rhinitis.
Non-infectious Rhinitis
This rhinitis is caused by external environmental factors, not infection. It primarily includes allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, drug-induced rhinitis, and atrophic rhinitis.
What is Allergic Rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis is the most commonly occurring disease among non-infectious rhinitis types. It is a condition where inflammation develops due to an overreaction of the nasal mucous membrane upon exposure to specific allergens. Key symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itching around the eyes or nose. These may also be accompanied by symptoms such as headaches, watery eyes, nosebleeds, and a reduced sense of smell. It particularly worsens during transitional seasons, and in severe cases, symptoms such as sleep disturbance, decreased concentration, and chronic fatigue may appear, leading to a diminished quality of life. Furthermore, it can be accompanied by other allergic conditions such as atopic dermatitis or asthma. If left untreated, severe nasal congestion can progress to sinusitis or otitis media.
