Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss — Examining the Risk of Liver Damage, Blood Sugar Management, and Menopausal Obesity

When I meet patients in the clinic, I get asked a lot, "Doctor, will just taking this one thing make me lose weight?" I completely understand the appeal of looking for an easy shortcut like a diet supplement when sticking to a diet perfectly is realistically so difficult.

Liver health risks you must know before choosing supplements

Among commonly found supplement ingredients, Garcinia cambogia extract (HCA) is known to work by blocking the process where carbohydrates are converted into fat, suppressing fat synthesis. But there's definitely something important to address behind that convenience.

In fact, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety conducted a re-evaluation in 2017 based on concerns about liver damage, and as a result, from April 4, 1, 2019, the mandatory labeling of 'Liver Damage Caution' was required for the relevant ingredient. It is not so much a problem of a single ingredient, but rather, abnormal reactions tend to occur when drinking alcohol or taking other medications and multiple supplements all at once. If you frequently attend company dinners or enjoy drinking and rely on supplements, your liver may easily bear that burden, so you need to be especially careful.

Relationship Between Lifestyle Patterns and Supplement Intake

Not everyone takes supplements solely for weight loss. Many people seek them out to try to get their disrupted daily rhythm back on track. In fact, there is research using dietary supplements to improve sleep quality and daytime functioning in shift workers, and a proportion of 65% [1] female appeared among subjects experiencing sleep disorders, showing a tendency for people in certain environments to rely more on supplements.

The problem is when you pick up trending products without knowing your body's fundamental metabolic state. I often see people who come to the clinic after suffering unexpected side effects instead of the weight loss results they had hoped for.

Menopausal Obesity and Metabolic Changes from a Korean Medicine Perspective

In particular, women in their 50s often express frustration, asking, "Why am I gaining weight even though I eat exactly the same as before?" It is not due to lack of willpower—it is due to hormonal changes such as decreased estrogen.

Before menopause, fat tends to accumulate mainly in the hips and thighs due to estrogen's influence. This is what you'd call pear-shaped obesity. Once you enter menopause and estrogen decreases, fat shifts to the abdomen and around the internal organs, changing to the male-pattern, apple-shaped obesity. Because metabolic rate itself drops during this period, it's extremely difficult to overcome these constitutional changes with general supplements alone.

Safe and wise supplement use tips

So how should you use supplements? Rather than blindly searching for "weight loss pills," I'd recommend a direction that takes care of your body's blood sugar and antioxidant status together.

These days, there are also complex ingredient products containing corosolic acid from banaba leaf extract that suppress postprandial blood glucose rise and help reduce body fat. It is a decent option for those exhausted by starving diets or those who need postprandial blood glucose management. However, when choosing a product, check carefully whether additives such as silicon dioxide or magnesium stearate are included.

The most important thing is the fact that supplements are literally 'supplements.' You can lose weight healthily only if you accurately understand your constitution and current metabolic capacity and combine that with a matching diet and lifestyle management.

The road to your target weight may sometimes feel dizzying and bleak. Still, if you approach it by accurately knowing the cause within your body, the answer is simpler than you think. With the Baekrok Gambi-jung tablet program tailored to the individual's constitution, you can expect more effective results beyond metabolic decline. Next time we meet in the consultation room, please feel free to tell me which supplements you have been considering. We will find the best method together.

I have met many patients who came after visiting multiple medical institutions and departments for persistent or recurrent conditions. Symptoms normally handled by different specialties—such as abdominal pain, headaches, palpitations, dizziness, and insomnia—may overlap in one person. Sometimes there is no clear improvement despite taking medication for each symptom, and being unwell gradually becomes part of daily life. In these cases, I look beyond individual diagnoses and examine how the symptoms connect and change together. Asking only about the most uncomfortable symptom today does not reveal the full course. I look at when the body first began to change and what happened after illness, surgery, childbirth, or starting and stopping medication. I also review changes in weight, diet, and sleep, then trace which symptoms improved with previous treatment and which remained. Test results, diagnoses, and the course of previous treatment are important for understanding the current condition. Clinical research in modern Korean medicine, physiological and pathological research in modern medicine, and observations recorded in classical Korean medicine texts offer different perspectives on the same body. Rather than fitting a patient into one perspective, I consider what each can and cannot explain and look for clues that connect symptoms and treatment histories that were previously considered separately.
