Causes and How to Differentiate Frequent Burping - Incheon Frequent Burping

Hello. This is Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.

Have you ever felt like you've been burping too frequently lately?

It's natural to burp once or twice after eating. However, when burping occurs frequently regardless of meals and becomes repetitive, it can subtly cause stress. Sometimes, burps might involuntarily make a sound in front of others, and you might feel like something's not right with your stomach. Today, we'd like to delve a little deeper into this phenomenon of frequent burping.

Why Do We Burp?

First, burping is a natural reaction that expels air from the stomach. We swallow small amounts of air when we eat, drink beverages, or even talk. When this swallowed air increases pressure in the stomach, the esophageal sphincter momentarily opens, causing a burp. This is a completely normal physiological response. The problem lies in its frequency, intensity, and the accompanying discomfort.

Why Does Frequent Burping Become a Problem?

More important than simply "making a sound" is the need to interpret the signals our body sends when burping becomes repetitive.

"After eating, I burp 5-6 times, and each time, my stomach goes from uncomfortable to relieved."

"My chest feels heavy all day, and I feel like I can only breathe properly if I intentionally burp."

"It's fine when I'm alone, but as soon as I'm in front of people, the burps keep coming up."

We hear these kinds of stories quite often.

There Are Also Types of Burping

In fact, burping can be broadly divided into two types.

First, 'True' Burping Originating from the Stomach.

This is air swallowed while eating, or gas produced by fermentation in the intestines that rises to the stomach. This often occurs when gastric emptying is delayed or when excessive gas is produced in the intestines. Examples include fast eating habits, carbonated drinks, high-FODMAP foods, indigestion, and SIBO.

Second, Habitual Burping.

In this case, air doesn't even reach the stomach; the burp only moves within the mouth and esophagus. This typically happens when someone is tense, anxious, or unconsciously repeats a 'release' behavior. Therefore, it's more accurate to view it as a case where 'the brain and behavioral circuits are interconnected rather than a primary stomach issue.'

What Associated Symptoms Indicate a Pathological Sign?

More important than the burping itself are the accompanying symptoms. For example,

  • Heartburn
  • Bloating and shortness of breath after meals
  • A feeling of fullness or air in the abdomen
  • A sensation of something rising in the throat
  • Recurrent nausea before and after meals

If these symptoms accompany frequent burping, it's likely a problem with gastrointestinal function rather than just a simple habit.

Another important factor is the relationship with meals. If burping occurs immediately after meals and there's a feeling of gastric distension, mechanisms like delayed gastric emptying or gastroesophageal reflux may be at play. Conversely, if it occurs irrespective of meals or only in specific situations, it points more towards a habitual cause.

Don't Just Try to Stop Burping; Understand Its Context

Burping is a natural physiological phenomenon. However, if it becomes frequent or intense enough to disrupt daily life, it could be a sign of an imbalance in the system, whether in the stomach or the brain. Rather than simply using "burp suppressants," it's crucial to first understand the context in which the burping began and what symptoms accompany it. Furthermore, if necessary, it's important to consider not only gastrointestinal examinations but also autonomic nervous system evaluation, gut microbiome analysis, and stress level checks.

Thank you.
