Hello, I am Yeonseung Choi, the lead director of Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic. Today, I'd like to talk about preparing for pregnancy when facing infertility.

1. Infertility: The High Wall Facing an Ardent Desire for a Child

It's been over a year since we got married, and there's no news of a baby, which worries us. Hospital tests found no specific cause, so why can't I get pregnant? Everyone around us seems to have children, and I wonder why only we have to go through such a difficult process.

Infertility refers to the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. A significant number of cases are unexplained infertility, where no clear cause is identified, which often leaves infertile couples feeling even more helpless. They repeatedly visit hospitals and undergo tests, but a clear solution often remains elusive.

2. A Traditional Korean Medicine Approach to Healing Body and Mind

While Western medicine's assisted reproductive technologies are important in infertility treatment, it is essential to first restore the body's balance and enhance its fundamental healing capabilities. Identifying and treating the root causes of infertility through traditional Korean medicine pattern identification (byeonjeung) is a highly meaningful approach to increasing pregnancy success rates.

3. Customized Herbal Medicine Prescriptions for Infertile Couples' Constitutions

At Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic, we approach the root causes of infertility through pattern differentiation and treatment (byeonjeungsichi) that addresses both deficiency syndromes (heojeung) and excess syndromes (siljeung). For infertility caused by Kidney Yang Deficiency (sinyangheo), we utilize herbs that warm and aid Kidney Yang (onsinjeoyang), such as Aconite (Buja) and Cinnamon Bark (Yukgye), in formulas like Palmijihwang-hwan (Bawei Dihuang Wan) and Ugwi-hwan (Yougui Wan). These have the effect of warming the Lower Jiao (hajyo) and supplementing Jing (essence).

4. Acupuncture and Moxibustion Therapy for Strengthening Uterine and Ovarian Function

Alongside herbal medicine, we combine acupuncture and moxibustion therapy (chimgu jiryo) to promote smooth flow of Qi and Blood (giheul) and facilitate the recovery of uterine and ovarian function. Specifically, stimulating acupoints on the Ren Meridian (Conception Vessel), such as CV4 (Guanyuan), CV3 (Zhongji), CV5 (Shimen), and ST25 (Tianshu), effectively sends Qi and Blood to the Lower Jiao, warming the uterus.

5. Paving the Way for Healthy Conception with Personalized Lifestyle Coaching

In addition to traditional Korean medicine treatments, improving the lifestyle habits of infertile couples is crucial. It's vital to avoid overwork, engage in moderate exercise to aid Qi and Blood circulation (giheul sunhwan), and strive for balanced nutrition to strengthen the Spleen and nourish Blood (geonbi yangheul). Irregular routines, alcohol and smoking, frequent late-night snacks, and excessive dieting should be avoided.

6. Creating Miracles Together with Unyielding Hope

After much effort, we were able to have a baby. The traditional Korean herbal medicine and acupuncture/moxibustion treatments, consistently prepared according to our constitution at the clinic, were a huge help. Most importantly, the warm encouragement that instilled hope became our pillar of support.

Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic will always be with you until the day you fully experience the joy of a healthy pregnancy. With the earnest wishes of all infertile couples, we pray that the flower of hope will fully blossom. Don't give up; you will surely bear beautiful fruit. We are rooting for you!

I have met many patients who came after visiting multiple medical institutions and departments for persistent or recurrent conditions. Symptoms normally handled by different specialties—such as abdominal pain, headaches, palpitations, dizziness, and insomnia—may overlap in one person. Sometimes there is no clear improvement despite taking medication for each symptom, and being unwell gradually becomes part of daily life. In these cases, I look beyond individual diagnoses and examine how the symptoms connect and change together. Asking only about the most uncomfortable symptom today does not reveal the full course. I look at when the body first began to change and what happened after illness, surgery, childbirth, or starting and stopping medication. I also review changes in weight, diet, and sleep, then trace which symptoms improved with previous treatment and which remained. Test results, diagnoses, and the course of previous treatment are important for understanding the current condition. Clinical research in modern Korean medicine, physiological and pathological research in modern medicine, and observations recorded in classical Korean medicine texts offer different perspectives on the same body. Rather than fitting a patient into one perspective, I consider what each can and cannot explain and look for clues that connect symptoms and treatment histories that were previously considered separately.
