“Please gain some weight.” While some say it is the most enviable worry in the world, for the person experiencing it, it is an indelible stress. A constitution that does not gain weight no matter how much one eats. Physical strength is weak, clothes do not fit well, and one may be misunderstood as being 'sensitive' or 'looking lifeless.'

“Others say it must be nice, but it's not for me. I lose weight rapidly even when I'm just slightly sick, and I desperately want to look healthy.”

Beyond simply being thin, it feels as if vitality and confidence in life are also draining away. This is a signal of an 'unfilled' concern sent by your constitution.

Causes and Symptoms

The reason a car cannot move forward even when high-quality fuel is added. The core problem of a thin constitution is not simply eating too little. It lies in the 'decline of digestive and absorptive capacity,' where the body cannot absorb as much as it consumes.

Shall we compare our body to a 'car'? No matter how much premium gasoline you fill it with, if the engine performance is low or the fuel pipe is leaking, the car cannot move forward powerfully. Similarly, even if you eat good food, if the 'engine' called the digestive system (Spleen and Stomach) is weak, the efficiency of converting nutrients into energy and weight decreases.

As a result, what is eaten is excreted as is, and the body remains in a constant state of energy deficiency. Being easily fatigued, dizzy, and experiencing indigestion even with slight stress are all due to this.

Traditional Korean Medicine Perspective

An imbalance between the 'power to absorb' and the 'power to protect.' Traditional Korean Medicine views the cause of a thin constitution as two core imbalances.

  1. First is the decline in function (Qi deficiency/氣虛) of the 'nutrient absorption factory (Spleen and Stomach/脾胃).' Even when raw materials in the form of food are received, the factory itself lacks the strength to operate properly to create energy.
  2. Second is a state where the body's 'engine (Heart, Liver)' is overheating, but the 'coolant (Yin Blood/陰血)' is insufficient. Since unnecessary heat continues to burn up energy, the body inevitably remains thin no matter how much is filled.

Therefore, treatment in Traditional Korean Medicine is not about blindly forcing one to eat more. It is about increasing the performance of the 'nutrient absorption factory' (tonifying the Spleen/補脾) so that everything eaten becomes weight, and cooling the 'overheated engine' (nourishing Yin/滋陰) to prevent unnecessary energy consumption. It is about helping the body find a healthy weight on its own by restoring these two balances.

Lifestyle Management

3 Principles for Healthy Weight Gain

Blindly eating a lot can instead place a burden on a weak digestive system. The key lies in 'how' you fill it.

  • Principle 1: Quality over Quantity - Even if you eat small amounts, compose a nutrient-dense diet rich in high-quality proteins and healthy fats. Nuts, dairy products, and lean meats are recommended.
  • Principle 2: Consistent Fueling - Rather than overeating at once, the secret to increasing absorption rates is to supply energy in small, frequent, and regular amounts so that the digestive system does not feel burdened.
  • Principle 3: Strength Training - To gain both physical strength and health, you must build 'muscle,' which serves as the pillar of the body, rather than simply increasing body fat. Try practicing light-weight strength training consistently.

Prognosis and Golden Time

Will you live with an 'energy overdraft account'? It is easy to think that a thin constitution is not a disease. However, it is like a state where the body's 'health reserve fund' is insufficient.

While it may seem problematic-free normally, the difference becomes stark when one contracts a serious illness, suffers extreme stress, or when vitality declines with age. A person with a 'minus account' of health recovers more slowly, suffers from frequent minor ailments, and lacks the strength to endure life's crises.

Correcting your constitution now is not simply about gaining a few kilograms. It is the wisest investment to pre-build a reliable 'health asset' that can protect you in any future crisis.

I have met many patients who came after visiting multiple medical institutions and departments for persistent or recurrent conditions. Symptoms normally handled by different specialties—such as abdominal pain, headaches, palpitations, dizziness, and insomnia—may overlap in one person. Sometimes there is no clear improvement despite taking medication for each symptom, and being unwell gradually becomes part of daily life. In these cases, I look beyond individual diagnoses and examine how the symptoms connect and change together. Asking only about the most uncomfortable symptom today does not reveal the full course. I look at when the body first began to change and what happened after illness, surgery, childbirth, or starting and stopping medication. I also review changes in weight, diet, and sleep, then trace which symptoms improved with previous treatment and which remained. Test results, diagnoses, and the course of previous treatment are important for understanding the current condition. Clinical research in modern Korean medicine, physiological and pathological research in modern medicine, and observations recorded in classical Korean medicine texts offer different perspectives on the same body. Rather than fitting a patient into one perspective, I consider what each can and cannot explain and look for clues that connect symptoms and treatment histories that were previously considered separately.
