Hello. I am Choi Yeon-seung, the head director of Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic. Today, I will summarize common questions frequently asked by headache patients. If you have any other questions, please leave a comment.

Chronic Headaches

Chronic headaches are persistent and often debilitating conditions that can significantly impact one's quality of life. These headaches occur frequently and persist for extended periods.

1. Understanding Chronic Headaches

"What are chronic headaches, and how do they differ from occasional or tension headaches?"

"Chronic headaches are recurrent and long-lasting headaches that occur more frequently than occasional headaches. They can be of various types, including tension headaches, migraines, or cluster headaches."

2. Symptoms of Chronic Headaches

"What are the typical symptoms associated with chronic headaches, and how do they impact daily life?"

"Common symptoms of chronic headaches include persistent head pain, sometimes accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light, and difficulty concentrating. These symptoms can interfere with daily activities."

3. Diagnosing Chronic Headaches

"How are chronic headaches diagnosed, and what steps typically comprise the diagnostic process?"

"Diagnosis involves a comprehensive medical evaluation, a review of headache history, and sometimes imaging tests. This helps determine the underlying type of chronic headache and potential triggers."

4. Treatment and Management

"What treatment options are available for chronic headaches, and how can they be effectively managed?"

"Treatment for chronic headaches may include Korean herbal medicine, acupuncture, lifestyle modifications, stress management, and identifying and avoiding headache triggers. Managing underlying conditions may also be crucial."

5. Promoting Headache Relief

"What can individuals do to promote headache relief and reduce the impact of chronic headaches on their lives?"

"Promoting headache relief involves working closely with healthcare professionals, keeping a headache diary, managing stress, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and making dietary and lifestyle changes as recommended."

Chronic headaches can be a persistent and challenging condition. To effectively manage chronic headaches and improve overall quality of life, it is crucial to seek medical advice, understand your specific headache type, and adhere to a personalized treatment plan.

I have met many patients who came after visiting multiple medical institutions and departments for persistent or recurrent conditions. Symptoms normally handled by different specialties—such as abdominal pain, headaches, palpitations, dizziness, and insomnia—may overlap in one person. Sometimes there is no clear improvement despite taking medication for each symptom, and being unwell gradually becomes part of daily life. In these cases, I look beyond individual diagnoses and examine how the symptoms connect and change together. Asking only about the most uncomfortable symptom today does not reveal the full course. I look at when the body first began to change and what happened after illness, surgery, childbirth, or starting and stopping medication. I also review changes in weight, diet, and sleep, then trace which symptoms improved with previous treatment and which remained. Test results, diagnoses, and the course of previous treatment are important for understanding the current condition. Clinical research in modern Korean medicine, physiological and pathological research in modern medicine, and observations recorded in classical Korean medicine texts offer different perspectives on the same body. Rather than fitting a patient into one perspective, I consider what each can and cannot explain and look for clues that connect symptoms and treatment histories that were previously considered separately.
