Hello, I am Dr. Choi Yeon-seung at Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.
The Emotional Weight of the Phrase "It Feels Like My Blood Isn't Circulating"
"Doctor, it feels like my blood isn't circulating." It's a phrase I hear often in the clinic.
But when you look closely at this one sentence, it's not simply talking about a vascular problem. It's the language of sensation and an expression of emotion.
The Flow of the Body and Sensation
When the body senses that something inside has been cut off, or that its flow has become abnormal, people say this: "It feels like my blood isn't circulating."
This is not a pathological diagnosis. Rather, it's a vague yet clear declaration of sensation—a sense that something is blocked, that somewhere feels stuffy, and that one cannot be in the place where one should be within one's own body.
It can also come out in expressions like "I'm itchy," "My head feels foggy," "I feel like I'm floating," "My legs don't feel like my own," or "I can't take a deep breath."
Feet Going Numb – Signals Come from the Periphery
"My feet have been tingling while I was just sitting still." "I haven't gotten hurt or anything, but there's a prickling discomfort."
When I hear such expressions, I realize that the signals the body sends first always start from the farthest points. The tips of the feet—the furthest point from the heart, the end point of blood vessels and the terminus of nerves.
Legs Prickling – The Borderline Between Sensation and Tension
"A tingling sensation like electricity runs down my leg." "It's not really painful, but when I sit down it strangely prickles."
Many people use "going numb" and "tingling" interchangeably, but in fact these two are entirely different sensations.
Hands Are Cold and Sensation Becomes Dull – When the Flow Disappears
"My fingertips are so cold." "My sensation is oddly dull, but it's not like I don't feel anything."
On the faces of people who say this, there's often an emotion of feeling as though something has become distant.
Head Feels Foggy – The Sensation of the Upper Body When Flow Has Stagnated
"My head feels foggy and I can't think of anything." "It feels like something is filling it up, but also like it's empty."
Frequent Headaches – The Language of Pressure That Cannot Break Through
"It feels like something is pressing down hard on my head." "The top of my head feels heavy, and I also feel a pulling sensation above my eyes."
Itching and Tingling – When Flow Vibrates on the Surface
"It's ticklish and I can't stand it." "Nothing has appeared on my skin, but my hand keeps going to it."
Frequent Dizziness – When Top-Bottom Balance Has Collapsed
"Even when I'm still, I feel like everything is spinning." "When I stand up after sitting, it feels like the world has tilted slightly."
Within the Sensations That Don't Flow, We See Where Things Have Stopped
The feeling that blood isn't circulating. This is not just a story about the flow of a liquid called blood.
