Rather than simply eating less, focusing on increasing protein proportion while reducing refined sugars creates a body state where meal sizes decrease yet energy is used more efficiently. Today, I'll share the decision criteria—like conversations in our clinic—on what to add and what to remove.

Why We Suffer from 'False Hunger' and Lethargy

Many patients complain of feeling hungry despite reducing food intake, or experiencing sudden afternoon fatigue. This often stems not from insufficient calories, but from excessive blood sugar fluctuations. Foods high in refined carbohydrates or sugar cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by sharp drops, triggering the brain's错觉 that energy is depleted and prompting cravings for sweets.

Protein, on the other hand, digests slowly and maintains satiety for longer. As an essential nutrient for generating hormones like insulin and repairing body tissues, adequate protein intake supports overall metabolic capacity beyond just muscle preservation. Simply increasing protein proportion in a typical Korean diet that is excessively high in carbohydrates can create an environment that reduces unnecessary snacking cravings.

How to Determine Your Ideal Protein Amount

In clinic, I frequently hear "They say to eat more protein, but how much exactly?" The answer varies based on individual goals and body weight.

For the average adult, approximately 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight is recommended. However, if the goal is to lose fat while maintaining or building muscle, consider consuming more than 1g per kg of body weight. For example, a 60kg individual should aim for at least 60g of protein daily.

The key point here is to distribute intake across meals rather than consuming it all at once. There's a limit to how much protein our bodies can absorb in a single meal. While chicken breast contains about 31g of protein per 100g, instead of eating it all at once, a strategy of distributing tofu, eggs, fish, and lean meats across each meal is needed.

The True Meaning of 'Low-Sugar' in Preventing Blood Sugar Spikes

A low-sugar diet doesn't mean completely eliminating carbohydrates. The focus is on limiting refined sugars and simple carbohydrates that cause rapid blood sugar elevation. This includes sugar, white rice, and flour-based bread.

Instead, choose whole grains or carbohydrate sources rich in dietary fiber. According to the Korean Diabetes Association, low-carbohydrate diets are known to provide long-term benefits for blood sugar improvement and cardiovascular disease prevention. The MFDS guidelines particularly emphasize customized nutritional management for those in the prediabetes stage; if fasting blood sugar is between 100-125mg/dL or HbA1c is 5.7-6.4%, more meticulous sugar management is necessary. Statistics show that 5-8% of people in this condition may progress to diabetes within a year, making low-sugar diets not a choice but an essential preventive measure.

The Traditional Korean Medicine Perspective on Protein and Metabolism

In Traditional Korean Medicine, rather than focusing solely on nutrient numbers, we observe how food is digested and transformed into energy within the body. Protein deficiency can easily lead to 'Qi deficiency (氣虛)'—a state where energy is lacking not only in muscles but throughout the entire body—which can subsequently result in decreased basal metabolism and edema.

Particularly, individuals with weak digestion may experience bloating or gas when suddenly attempting a high-protein diet. In such cases, rather than insisting on animal proteins only, mixing in plant-based proteins like tofu or beans is advisable. Research shows that composing meals primarily around fish, vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil—as in the Mediterranean diet—can help regulate blood pressure and improve blood sugar, which aligns with the Traditional Korean Medicine philosophy of 'balance and harmony.'

Practical High-Protein, Low-Sugar Points You Can Apply Today

Vaguely thinking "I should eat better" increases failure probability. Establish concrete criteria from the shopping stage to meal arrangement.

  • Plate Composition Rule: Fill half your plate with fiber-rich vegetables, one quarter with quality protein (chicken, fish, tofu, eggs), and the remaining quarter with whole grains (brown rice, oats, quinoa).

  • Sugar Substitutes: Choose sparkling water or tea instead of sugary beverages, and switch from white bread to rye or whole wheat bread.

  • Protein Diversification: Eating chicken breast every day becomes monotonous quickly. Rotate white fish, seafood, legumes, and low-fat dairy products.

  • Change Meal Order: Try eating vegetables → protein → carbohydrates. When fiber and protein enter first, they slow carbohydrate absorption, helping prevent blood sugar spikes.

Final Advice for a Sustainable Diet

During diet management, moments of willpower depletion and explosive reactions to restrained sugar inevitably occur. Even during my busy clinic schedule, I sometimes crave sweets. The key is not 'perfection' but 'direction.'
